Dance and Cante Workshops with
Lakshmi Basile
and Luis Peña

    Flamenco Technique:
In this class, Lakshmi will teach an intensive workout focused on
strengthening the student's technical foundation. All exercises will be
done "a compas" (at tempo). Four "palos" (flamenco rhythms) will be
used- Soleá, Alegrias, Bulerias and Tangos. Class will begin with a series
of footwork exercises and followed by marking ("Marcaje") exercises.
Marking will be accompanied with Cante. Then we will do the famous
Farruco turns to finish up the warm-up. After warm-up, Lakshmi will mount
various short choreographies to apply and combine the techniques
learned. This technique class is designed to be beneficial for all levels.

    Baile por Bulerias y Palmas:
Authentic gypsy-style choreography direct from the creator, Luis Peña, will
be taught and then repeated over and over until it becomes natural for
all. At the same time, we will dance it with various styles of Cante por
Bulerias, so as to feel more and more comfortable and confident. Palma
(hand-clapping) variations will also be given and practiced in class,
because to dance por Bulerias one must know how to play palmas por
Bulerias. Finally, the last ten minutes of class Luis will share his personal
flamenco videos. Each day he will introduce a different artist and explain
what they do best and why they are who they are in the flamenco world.
This class is appropriate for singers, dancers and guitarists alike because
the style is por fiesta and anyone can get up and dance in a fiesta!

    Cante Gitano:
Each student will be given a sheet of paper with all the verses (letras)
that will be taught. This way the spelling is clear and we avoid losing time.
As in the dance class, we will repeat the letras many times with and
without Luis. This class is for singers, dancers and guitarists alike. It is so
important to understand the cante to be able to dance to it. This will give
dancers a better idea how to “bailar al cante” (dance to the singing),
which is the idea in flamenco dance. Guitarists will clarify the appropriate
keys (tonos) they must recognize when accompanying cante. The last ten
minutes will be dedicated to sharing flamenco videos of famous cantaores
(as). Luis will specify the style of cante, its origin, who made it famous, etc.
